The Aztecs were aware of, and appreciated, the art and architecture of their predecessors. They borrowed and adapted previous artistic styles and incorporated existing gods and symbols into their own religious practices. The Aztecs prized the work of the Olmecs and appropriated the culture of the illustrious Toltecs, in particular their capital city Tula. But they are best known for associating themselves with the splendours and magnificence of the city of Teotihuacan.
