The Aztecs had many gods who governed all aspects of their lives. The ruler of the Underworld was Mictlantecuhtli, the Lord of Death. The Upper World was ruled by Ometeotl, who was both male and female. Priests were greatly respected in Aztec society and their role was to carry out public ceremonies and rituals to meet the demands of the gods. Infamously, this included human sacrifices, in which the hearts and blood of people would be offered up to the gods as a sign of gratitude. Many of these sacrifices took place at the Great Temple of Mexico-Tenochtitlan.
